Survey report

Alya Albazie

My hypothesis is about smoking. Smoking is a great danger that affects peoples’ lives not only smokers themselves, but also people who are around them. The subject is smoking parents, and how that constitutes a danger for children. It is very important issue to discuss to reach to solutions to decrease. In addition, my hypothesis is “Students who have parents, who smoke are more likely to start smoking”. I was very interested in knowing how the others can influence someone even if they are his parents. My group members are Atigah, Majed, Sooma and I. I have had all my survey’s questions at the Student Center. Also, I collected around 12 surveys. It was a good feeling to communicate with others, and found all people were nice and very helpful.

In my survey, I asked many people from both genders. Really, when I asked those people, they were kind and gentle. They were smiling, when I asked them to fill out my questionnaire. They were very welcoming. My group and I quested in our survey 47 Americans (14 females, 33males). We used demographic and Yes/No questions to know how those questions and answers were related with our hypothesis. In the survey, I found very interesting thing when men answered that they can quit any time they want, but women said no. We found the majority of views about parents who are smoking and there is an effect on their children, around 80% among our respondents. Moreover, more than 88% said that their fathers, mothers or both are smokers. Therefore, we knew that if parents are smokers, they will affect their children absolutely. We had more than 88% respondents, who illustrated that they tried smoking before, and they did not have rules for smoking in their houses. The result that we got, we knew that our survey supported and explained that there was an effect from parents on their children because they saw them their example. Furthermore, the great influence from parents, I used many articles to support my claim that the surrounding will affect on teenagers even from inside the house or outside. I learned how smoking is a great danger, which can hurt everyone than the smokers themselves, or people who are around them.

Summary:

In this article, the author discusses the danger of smoking cigarettes. She says that it is not too late to tell or advise any person who smokes to stop smoking. He describes the real danger around us from smoking even we are not smoking cigarettes. Also she explains the bad side effects from smoking on the persons who are around smokers themselves. She mentions many diseases which are caused by cigarettes like different kinds of cancer and respiratory diseases. In addition she mentions how smoking affects DNA in people. However, she advises all persons who are in the same area with smokers to be in an open area to decrease the dangers of chemicals like ammonia and other substances on their bodies. Furthermore, she emphasizes the effects on the smokers if that quit day after day on their health and how their bodies return their health step by step, after giving up. Moreover, she explains the benefits from quitting like decreasing many problems of breathing and of the heart.

Reaction:

Really we are in great danger from smoking, which affects our bodies from smokers around us if they are members of our families or friends. I wish that all countries prevent the production of cigarettes to prevent the side effects on the humans. In my country; Saudi Arabia, smoking is allowed for men, but for women, generally this matter is prohibited, because just they are women, and that thing is very shameful for them to do except in the west region. There are many solutions to prevent smoking in the public areas like what happens in different places over the whole world, changing some habits as daily habits in the morning when the person wakes up and immediately tries to smoke, under stress and hard situations. When I was in my country, I always advised my brothers to stop smoking gradually for their health. Moreover, as for the side effects of cigarettes, I hate the smell of cigarettes. Consequently, the benefits of quitting are many, such as the decreasing of blood pressure and heart diseases. We should cooperate together to help smokers to make their efforts to give up and live normal lives.

survey project

The subject of smoking has recently become a hot topic in classrooms and discussion groups across the country. As future U.S college students we wanted to find what other students thought about smoking. In our report, my partners Majed, Alya, Atiqa, and i wanted to investigate what people in Southern Illinois and what students at southern Illinois University Carbondale thought about the topic. We formulated the hypothesis" student who have parents who smoke are more likely to start smoking" we then created a survey to interview our respondents about the topic. To our surprise, not only were most of our respondent in accordance with the hypothesis, but a number of articles also support our initial ideas. My groups and I conducted our survey of 47 students (33 mails – 14 females) at SIU–Carbondale; also they were 18 – 30 years old. In addition, 33of the people who answered were Single; 11 of the people who answered were Married; 4 was from Mexico; 1 was from Tunisia; 10 were Hispanic; 6 were from Asia; 3 were from Egypt; 1 were from Saudi Arabia; and 2 was from Morocco and the rest from American.
I learned many things, for example the smoking is very dangerous to all humans. Own survey found that the majority of Americans a greed that smoking is very harmful. Also, our results support the same idea with American society. I was interested that the number of smokers is increasing year by year. We had a image that smoking is very hard and run up against some problems such as cancer, heart disease, and high blood pressure. We felt some smokers have enough opportunity to live in a new life. However, they must quit smoking. We wish that our survey could be harmful about understating our hypothesis. The following result we hope to discuss how to quit smoking.
Our survey was intended to see what Americans thought of smokers. We believed that most Americans believed that smokers are harmful for people.  We asked some Americans if they had tried a cigarette (even one), at what age you tried your first cigarette. Nineteen people said they have never tried a cigarette. Thirteen said from age fourteen or under.  Eight said between fifteen to eighteen. And seven said over eighteen. We then asked Americans who told you not to smoke cigarettes. Thirty two said parents. Three said the old brothers. One said teacher. Thirteen said no one. Finally, we asked Americans if they thought that smoking should be reduced in the United States. Eleven said that smokers should be reduced in America; ten said they should not be reduced, while nine said that they did not know if they should be reduced in America. We think that some of the reason for this is the news coverage about the smoking. We believe that once the media coverage becomes better, Americans will view smokers as more positive. If we had to advise someone else doing this type of project, we would tell them to make sure to ask different types of people. Also, they should not be afraid to approach people since most do not mind taking the survey

The Effects of Smoking on Families

The subject of the effects of smoking on families is very important because the smoker directly and indirectly affects on his or her family. As future U.S. college students, my research partner, Alya Alazie , Hussam Alsaed, Majed Almarzuqi and I wanted to investigate what people in southern Illinois and what students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale thought about the topic. We formulated the hypothesis, “Americans believe families members are the first the first people who get cigarette harm”. We created a survey because we were curious to know the answers of our questions. For example, what people think about the harm of smokers who play with their children? It comes down to the Americans believe: families members are the first are people who get cigarette harm.

My partners and I found similar results to our topic. However, there were almost few individuals in our study believed that the smoking is danger on families members. In the following report, I will show the method that was used to do the survey, the results of the project, and then supply a discussion of the data and analyze why perhaps the respondents answers the way they did. Through this analysis, we will see that the overwhelming majority of people do actually believe that smoking is very dangerous on anybody who smoke and his or her family.

During the analysis of the survey result, I found that most Americans agree with my hypothesis. They believed that other people who smoke cigarettes are harmful to their families. Smoking must not an allowed in their home. On the other hand, I found that there are 16 people out of 47 who said that smoking could be allowed anywhere in their home. It is interesting because they know that smoking is harmful for them and their family, but they do not care about it.
The article, “Smoking, Secondhand Smoke and our Health,” by June M.Lay, supports my hypothesis. This article shows the size of dangerous smoking and the positive reason to smokers quit.
The most successful thing in the survey is my idea to make simple and easy questions. When I surveyed people they answered my questions at 1 minute because most of them were busy. They were walking in the street or working on the computer. Also, our topic is familiar to all people (young, adult). Moreover, I asked people face to face because I wanted to make more American friends and to notice the people’s reaction. One of my participants said to me: thanks for making simple questions that is very helpful for me. I learned many things form this survey. For instance, how can chose the survey questions, how can make graphics and how can analyze the date from my result.
However, I suggest that students who will choose a topic similar to my hypothesis to decide carefully their participants. For example, if you have 40 paper you may ask 20 male and 20 female to do balance between the answers. Also, you may ask different ages, marital status and occupation. That Gender allowed you get great percent from your survey. Moreover, try to find one who free to ask because you have to practices all your English skills.

Parents’ Role in Their Children Smoking Habit

This term we were supposed to do a survey report about smoking. My team Aliya, Atigah, Sooma, and I wanted to know how people in Southern Illinois University feel about the parents’ role in their children’s’ smoking habit. We formulated our hypothesis, “Students who have parents who smoke are more likely to start smoking”. We conducted 47 surveys in SIU (33 males, 14 females). All of the surveys were done at SIU students’ center and engineering college. Personally I got 15 out of the surveys. Actually I gain a lot from doing the surveys. For example, I got to know how American students cooperate with internationals. And also it gave me more self-confidence to meet new people and make good relations.

In general, the project was successful because of a number of reasons. First, it gave me an opportunity to know how American students deal with internationals. Second, this survey gave me the key skills to do professional research papers that will help me in my future academic study. Third, doing studies like this would give me more confidence to do future studies to understand how people think about certain issues. Actually the results were in accordance with our hypothesis because in my RRJ 4 I wrote about it and I made a small study to check the reality of the article that I was reading and the results were in accordance with the article as well.

Actually the results showed strong evidence that supports our hypothesis. Out of all smokers in our surveys there were 68% of them who had parents who smoke, on the other hand, out of all non-smokers we found that 67% of them had parents who do not smoke. So, the majority of smokers have smoking parents, and non-smokers they have non-smoking parents. The surprising result was, most of smokers think that they can quit smoking whenever they wanted. But we found only 18% managed to quit and 82% were still trying to quit.

Finally I would be better if we could study what were the root causes of smoking and normally at what age the children start smoking. The result of this survey would help s prevent our children from smoking because we would know the main causes, and the age that we should pay more attention to them. We can improve our survey by interviewing more people, not only in SIU but also in lager community as well to get more realistic results that can apply to a larger people groups.

Smoking, Secondhand and thirdhand Smoke and our Health!

Summary

According to June M, Lay, M. S; in this article “Smoking Secondhand Smoke and our Health” the authors support this article by using a combination of facts, personal opinions and evidence obtained from recent polls. In begin, June and Lay hope that all people must connection together to help anyone who smokes to quit. The authors give much information about smoking and respiratory disease. They discuss three smoking cases .First of all, they show us how firsthand is dangerous. As they describe that cigarette damages smoker’s DNA. In addition, they explain that there are relation between smoking and cancer. Second, as the authors show that secondhand smoke is very dangerous because “cigarette smoke contains over 63 different chemicals which we inhale if we smoke or are near someone who is smoking”. Next, they show how we inhale toxic chemicals in the public places and he gives a restaurant as example. Third, the authors explain that there is also thirdhand smoke. They improve his writing with scientist’s facts. The scientists find that ‘“thirdhand smoke” the invisible remains of cigarette smoke that deposits and remain on carpeting….. and other surfaces’. They give that how chemicals can affect babies crawling as example .In the end, they explain “the positive reasons to quit”. In sum, these are the author’s arguments; however, I will show you some points that I agree and disagree with there.

Reaction:

In this article ,Smoking Secondhand Smoke and our Health, I agree with the authors on some points which is all people have same assignment to help cigarette smoke to quit. There are many people who do not belief of effect articles. I kind of agree with their belief. But, this article changed my mind. I have a strong reason to support my argument. The authors support their article by using a combination of facts, personal opinions and evidence obtained from recent polls I like their three strong reasons .First, they show us how firsthand smoke is dangerous on our healthy. How is this possible? “Cigarettes destroy a smoker’s DNA within minute of inhaling”. Cigarettes also cause for cancer and other illnesses. Second, they showed us how secondhand smoke. The secondhand smoke contains over 63 different chemicals. That is why in some places the smoking is not allowed for example, restaurants and hospitals. Third, they show us how Thirdhand smoke is also very dangerous. I like their deep describe that thirdhand smoke is not “invisible” for example on clothing and on furniture. In my opinion, we have to pay attention with three cases of smoking because they are very effect on our healthy. There is one point that I do not agree with. It is Firsthand, secondhand smoke and thirdhand smoke “ can be equally dangerous to our healthy?” I have my argument. I know that firsthand smoke is less dangerous than secondhand and thirdhand smoke. Moreover, secondhand smoke is less dangerours than thirdhand smoke. So, when someone smokes he will take just the harm of cigarette. However, When someone near someone who smoking he or she will inhale the nicotine and other chemical that in the air. Moreover, if someone napping on the sofa then he will inhale nicotin, other chemical in air and new chemical on the sofa. So, three cases of smoke can not be equally dangerous. In short, we need to save our life because smoking causes people to die indirectly.

If smokers quit, who will our children have to look down to?

Summary:

According to this article, there are 20 percent of adults in a province of Canada who use tobacco. This number leads

to this: there are young children who also smoke. In the 1970s approximately 102 percent of Canadian adults smoke . The kids

believed that you had nothing to do in your free time if you did not smoke. An oddball person who did not get smoking could

do any thing to feel cool .For example, they used their shirt to smell the air in the car. The local rink is smoke free. That is

why some players are in such poor physical condition. Smoking causes people to die indirectly.

Reaction:

I disappointed by the news that comes in this article. I surprised when I read the number of smokers in one country in 1977. In

every country alarming people to avoid smoking is very important, for example, by using radio, TV or magazine. The cigarette

does not affect on the smokers but also effects people who sit behind the smoke .That called "Second-hand smoke". Most

people who smoke have problems on their life, for example, family problem, studying stress, losing job ,bad friends and alot of

free time I think most of these people are teenagers . The role of the family is very important to watch their children and their

children's friends. There are a link between tobacco and the dangers of diseases like cancer

Teen Attitudes Toward Smoking Linked To Likelihood Of Drinking And Using Drugs

Reference:

ScienceDaily (2009, oct.3) Teen Attitude Toward Smoking Linked To Likelihood Of Drinking And Using Drugs

Summary:

In this article, the author discusses the danger of smoking cigarettes. He says that will guide teenagers of both genders towards using other things like drinking alcohol, smoking marijuana, and doing drugs. Teenagers who smoke or do drugs can also affect their friends to do the same as well. He advises all parents to be good examples for their children, and be aware of bad relationships which certainly will affect their children with negative results especially among high schools student. Also, if those teenagers see their parents have ambivalent and permissive attitudes towards these forbidden things there will not be sanction for them from doing the same.

Reaction:

When I read this article, I felt that the effect of teenagers on each other is considered great because of their influence. In my opinion, all societies are suffering from this thing, but in my country using drugs, drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes and marijuana are more popular among males than females. I wish that all parents take care of their children and be careful of everything around them to prevent danger and bad things from happening as they can as they could. I am very sorry that teenagers are being influenced by drug dealers who present the devil side and greed of human beings even if this thing will spoil the whole community. When I was a teacher, I always advise my students to be a good example for their friends and their young children in their families. Understanding the influence teenagers have on their friends, I will continue to instruct them in the dangers of doing bad things such as smoking, or drugs.

She describes different ways to avoid students frustrated or being depressed because they cannot understand what is going on through teacher’s explanation for the lesson. She advises English teachers to change their strategy to make their classes very interesting for their students like talking or discussing something they love to talk about, make the class as group work in each group has various students’ interests. In addition, she mentions some difficulties which may face English teachers in using various dialogues between their students, how to keep them away from exhausted from a long time in discussing a subject in English whom they do not have too much words about it. Also, how to make reading in text books help students effectively and let them interact with each other all the time in English without need to open Chinese dictionary to look at the meaning of the word. Furthermore, she guides English teachers how to be successful in oral English classes. They must let their students talk about interesting things to attract their attention to learning the language.
Reaction:
Really it is very interesting article. I would like all English teachers to follow her advices to be good English teachers. In addition, how English teachers add to their classes more fun to be easy for students to gain the language. I like her illustration for many strategies about how to avoid difficulties in oral English classes and they will be more effectively for both students and teachers. She guided teachers to the correct way they can run classes and keep their students away from boring. In my opinion if all English teachers follow all these instructions, they will create new generation of students love learning English. Moreover, teachers will not find any constraints in teaching English or any skill.
