Smoking is a great danger that affects peoples’ lives not only smokers themselves, but also people who are around them. The subject is smoking parents, and how that constitutes a danger for children. It is very important issue to discuss to reach to solutions to decrease. In addition, my hypothesis is “Students who have parents, who smoke are more likely to start smoking”. I was very interested in knowing how the others can influence someone even if they are his parents. My group members are Atigah, Majed, Sooma and I. I have had all my survey’s questions at the Student Center. Also, I collected around 12 surveys. It was a good feeling to communicate with others, and found all people were nice and very helpful.

In my survey, I asked many people from both genders. Really, when I asked those people, they were kind and gentle. They were smiling, when I asked them to fill out my questionnaire. They were very welcoming. My group and I quested in our survey 47 Americans (14 females, 33males). We used demographic and Yes/No questions to know how those questions and answers were related with our hypothesis. In the survey, I found very interesting thing when men answered that they can quit any time they want, but women said no. We found the majority of views about parents who are smoking and there is an effect on their children, around 80% among our respondents. Moreover, more than 88% said that their fathers, mothers or both are smokers. Therefore, we knew that if parents are smokers, they will affect their children absolutely. We had more than 88% respondents, who illustrated that they tried smoking before, and they did not have rules for smoking in their houses. The result that we got, we knew that our survey supported and explained that there was an effect from parents on their children because they saw them their example. Furthermore, the great influence from parents, I used many articles to support my claim that the surrounding will affect on teenagers even from inside the house or outside. I learned how smoking is a great danger, which can hurt everyone than the smokers themselves, or people who are around them.

Smoking, Secondhand and Health!

Alya Albazie

EAP 1-D

Date 14/2/2011

RRJ#3

Smoking, Secondhand and Health!

References:

Lay, J.S.(2011, Jan.18) Smoking , Secondhand and our health! She says that it is not too late to tell or advise any person who smokes to stop smoking. He describes the real danger around us from smoking even we are not smoking cigarettes. Also she explains the bad side effects from smoking on the persons who are around smokers themselves. She mentions many diseases which are caused by cigarettes like different kinds of cancer and respiratory diseases. In addition she mentions how smoking affects DNA in people. However, she advises all persons who are in the same area with smokers to be in an open area to decrease the dangers of chemicals like ammonia and other substances on their bodies. Furthermore, she emphasizes the effects on the smokers if that quit day after day on their health and how their bodies return their health step by step, after giving up. Moreover, she explains the benefits from quitting like decreasing many problems of breathing and of the heart.

Reaction:

Really we are in great danger from smoking, which affects our bodies from smokers around us if they are members of our families or friends. I wish that all countries prevent the production of cigarettes to prevent the side effects on the humans. In my country; Saudi Arabia, smoking is allowed for men, but for women, generally this matter is prohibited, because just they are women, and that thing is very shameful for them to do except in the west region. There are many solutions to prevent smoking in the public areas like what happens in different places over the whole world, changing some habits as daily habits in the morning when the person wakes up and immediately tries to smoke, under stress and hard situations. When I was in my country, I always advised my brothers to stop smoking gradually for their health. Moreover, as for the side effects of cigarettes, I hate the smell of cigarettes. Consequently, the benefits of quitting are many, such as the decreasing of blood pressure and heart diseases. We should cooperate together to help smokers to make their efforts to give up and live normal lives. As future U.S college students we wanted to find what other students thought about smoking. In our report, my partners Majed, Alya, Atiqa, and i wanted to investigate what people in Southern Illinois and what students at southern Illinois University Carbondale thought about the topic. We formulated the hypothesis" student who have parents who smoke are more likely to start smoking" we then created a survey to interview our respondents about the topic. To our surprise, not only were most of our respondent in accordance with the hypothesis, but a number of articles also support our initial ideas. My groups and I conducted our survey of 47 students (33 mails – 14 females) at SIU–Carbondale; also they were 18 – 30 years old. In addition, 33of the people who answered were Single; 11 of the people who answered were Married; 4 was from Mexico; 1 was from Tunisia; 10 were Hispanic; 6 were from Asia; 3 were from Egypt; 1 were from Saudi Arabia; and 2 was from Morocco and the rest from American.
I learned many things, for example the smoking is very dangerous to all humans. Own survey found that the majority of Americans a greed that smoking is very harmful. Also, our results support the same idea with American society. I was interested that the number of smokers is increasing year by year. We had a image that smoking is very hard and run up against some problems such as cancer, heart disease, and high blood pressure. We felt some smokers have enough opportunity to live in a new life. However, they must quit smoking. We wish that our survey could be harmful about understating our hypothesis. The following result we hope to discuss how to quit smoking.
Our survey was intended to see what Americans thought of smokers. We believed that most Americans believed that smokers are harmful for people. We asked some Americans if they had tried a cigarette (even one), at what age you tried your first cigarette. Nineteen people said they have never tried a cigarette. Thirteen said from age fourteen or under. Eight said between fifteen to eighteen. And seven said over eighteen. We then asked Americans who told you not to smoke cigarettes. Thirty two said parents. Three said the old brothers. One said teacher. Thirteen said no one. Finally, we asked Americans if they thought that smoking should be reduced in the United States. Eleven said that smokers should be reduced in America; ten said they should not be reduced, while nine said that they did not know if they should be reduced in America. We think that some of the reason for this is the news coverage about the smoking. We believe that once the media coverage becomes better, Americans will view smokers as more positive. If we had to advise someone else doing this type of project, we would tell them to make sure to ask different types of people. Also, they should not be afraid to approach people since most do not mind taking the survey

Atigah Karnaf

The Effects of Smoking on Families

The subject of the effects of smoking on families is very important because the smoker directly and indirectly affects on his or her family. As future U.S. college students, my research partner, Alya Alazie , Hussam Alsaed, Majed Almarzuqi and I wanted to investigate what people in southern Illinois and what students at Southern Illinois University Carbondale thought about the topic. We formulated the hypothesis, “Americans believe families members are the first the first people who get cigarette harm”. We created a survey because we were curious to know the answers of our questions. For example, what people think about the harm of smokers who play with their children? It comes down to the Americans believe: families members are the first are people who get cigarette harm.

My partners and I found similar results to our topic. However, there were almost few individuals in our study believed that the smoking is danger on families members. In the following report, I will show the method that was used to do the survey, the results of the project, and then supply a discussion of the data and analyze why perhaps the respondents answers the way they did. Through this analysis, we will see that the overwhelming majority of people do actually believe that smoking is very dangerous on anybody who smoke and his or her family.

During the analysis of the survey result, I found that most Americans agree with my hypothesis. They believed that other people who smoke cigarettes are harmful to their families. Smoking must not an allowed in their home. On the other hand, I found that there are 16 people out of 47 who said that smoking could be allowed anywhere in their home. It is interesting because they know that smoking is harmful for them and their family, but they do not care about it.
The article, “Smoking, Secondhand Smoke and our Health,” by June M.Lay, supports my hypothesis. This article shows the size of dangerous smoking and the positive reason to smokers quit.
The most successful thing in the survey is my idea to make simple and easy questions. When I surveyed people they answered my questions at 1 minute because most of them were busy. They were walking in the street or working on the computer. Also, our topic is familiar to all people (young, adult). Moreover, I asked people face to face because I wanted to make more American friends and to notice the people’s reaction. One of my participants said to me: thanks for making simple questions that is very helpful for me. I learned many things form this survey. For instance, how can chose the survey questions, how can make graphics and how can analyze the date from my result.
However, I suggest that students who will choose a topic similar to my hypothesis to decide carefully their participants. For example, if you have 40 paper you may ask 20 male and 20 female to do balance between the answers. Also, you may ask different ages, marital status and occupation. That Gender allowed you get great percent from your survey. Moreover, try to find one who free to ask because you have to practices all your English skills.

Parents’ Role in Their Children Smoking Habit

This term we were supposed to do a survey report about smoking. My team Aliya, Atigah, Sooma, and I wanted to know how people in Southern Illinois University feel about the parents’ role in their children’s’ smoking habit. We formulated our hypothesis, “Students who have parents who smoke are more likely to start smoking”. We conducted 47 surveys in SIU (33 males, 14 females). All of the surveys were done at SIU students’ center and engineering college. Personally I got 15 out of the surveys. Actually I gain a lot from doing the surveys. For example, I got to know how American students cooperate with internationals. And also it gave me more self-confidence to meet new people and make good relations.

In general, the project was successful because of a number of reasons. First, it gave me an opportunity to know how American students deal with internationals. Second, this survey gave me the key skills to do professional research papers that will help me in my future academic study. Third, doing studies like this would give me more confidence to do future studies to understand how people think about certain issues. Actually the results were in accordance with our hypothesis because in my RRJ 4 I wrote about it and I made a small study to check the reality of the article that I was reading and the results were in accordance with the article as well.

Actually the results showed strong evidence that supports our hypothesis. Out of all smokers in our surveys there were 68% of them who had parents who smoke, on the other hand, out of all non-smokers we found that 67% of them had parents who do not smoke. So, the majority of smokers have smoking parents, and non-smokers they have non-smoking parents. The surprising result was, most of smokers think that they can quit smoking whenever they wanted. But we found only 18% managed to quit and 82% were still trying to quit.

Finally I would be better if we could study what were the root causes of smoking and normally at what age the children start smoking. The result of this survey would help s prevent our children from smoking because we would know the main causes, and the age that we should pay more attention to them. We can improve our survey by interviewing more people, not only in SIU but also in lager community as well to get more realistic results that can apply to a larger people groups.

Atigah Karnaf

Smoking, Secondhand and thirdhand Smoke and our Health!

Reference: June, M. Lay, M.S. (2011, Jan. 18). Smoking, Secondhand Smoke and our Health!

Retrieved 14 February . 2011 from Contributing Columnist - HealthNewsDigest.com

Summary

According to June M, Lay, M. S; in this article “Smoking Secondhand Smoke and our Health” the authors support this article by using a combination of facts, personal opinions and evidence obtained from recent polls. In begin, June and Lay hope that all people must connection together to help anyone who smokes to quit. The authors give much information about smoking and respiratory disease. They discuss three smoking cases .First of all, they show us how firsthand is dangerous. As they describe that cigarette damages smoker’s DNA. In addition, they explain that there are relation between smoking and cancer. Second, as the authors show that secondhand smoke is very dangerous because “cigarette smoke contains over 63 different chemicals which we inhale if we smoke or are near someone who is smoking”. Next, they show how we inhale toxic chemicals in the public places and he gives a restaurant as example. Third, the authors explain that there is also thirdhand smoke. They improve his writing with scientist’s facts. The scientists find that ‘“thirdhand smoke” the invisible remains of cigarette smoke that deposits and remain on carpeting….. and other surfaces’. They give that how chemicals can affect babies crawling as example .In the end, they explain “the positive reasons to quit”. In sum, these are the author’s arguments; however, I will show you some points that I agree and disagree with there.

Reaction:

In this article ,Smoking Secondhand Smoke and our Health, I agree with the authors on some points which is all people have same assignment to help cigarette smoke to quit. There are many people who do not belief of effect articles. I kind of agree with their belief. But, this article changed my mind. I have a strong reason to support my argument. The authors support their article by using a combination of facts, personal opinions and evidence obtained from recent polls I like their three strong reasons .First, they show us how firsthand smoke is dangerous on our healthy. How is this possible? “Cigarettes destroy a smoker’s DNA within minute of inhaling”. Cigarettes also cause for cancer and other illnesses. Second, they showed us how secondhand smoke. The secondhand smoke contains over 63 different chemicals. That is why in some places the smoking is not allowed for example, restaurants and hospitals. Third, they show us how Thirdhand smoke is also very dangerous. I like their deep describe that thirdhand smoke is not “invisible” for example on clothing and on furniture. In my opinion, we have to pay attention with three cases of smoking because they are very effect on our healthy. There is one point that I do not agree with. It is Firsthand, secondhand smoke and thirdhand smoke “ can be equally dangerous to our healthy?” I have my argument. I know that firsthand smoke is less dangerous than secondhand and thirdhand smoke. Moreover, secondhand smoke is less dangerours than thirdhand smoke. So, when someone smokes he will take just the harm of cigarette. However, When someone near someone who smoking he or she will inhale the nicotine and other chemical that in the air. Moreover, if someone napping on the sofa then he will inhale nicotin, other chemical in air and new chemical on the sofa. So, three cases of smoke can not be equally dangerous. In short, we need to save our life because smoking causes people to die indirectly.

Atigah Karnaf

If smokers quit, who will our children have to look down to?

Summary:

According to this article, there are 20 percent of adults in a province of Canada who use tobacco. This number leads

to this: there are young children who also smoke. In the 1970s approximately 102 percent of Canadian adults smoke . The kids

believed that you had nothing to do in your free time if you did not smoke. An oddball person who did not get smoking could

do any thing to feel cool .For example, they used their shirt to smell the air in the car. The local rink is smoke free. That is

why some players are in such poor physical condition. Smoking causes people to die indirectly.

Reaction:

I disappointed by the news that comes in this article. I surprised when I read the number of smokers in one country in 1977. In

every country alarming people to avoid smoking is very important, for example, by using radio, TV or magazine. The cigarette

does not affect on the smokers but also effects people who sit behind the smoke .That called "Second-hand smoke". Most

people who smoke have problems on their life, for example, family problem, studying stress, losing job ,bad friends and alot of

free time I think most of these people are teenagers . The role of the family is very important to watch their children and their

children's friends. There are a link between tobacco and the dangers of diseases like cancer

Teen Attitudes Toward Smoking Linked To Likelihood Of Drinking And Using Drugs

Alya Albazie
EAP 1-D
Date: 30/1/2011
RRJ#2

Teen Attitudes Toward Smoking Linked To Likelihood Of Drinking And Using Drugs

Reference:

ScienceDaily (2009, oct.3) Teen Attitude Toward Smoking Linked To Likelihood Of Drinking And Using Drugs

Summary:

In this article, the author discusses the danger of smoking cigarettes. She describes different ways to avoid students frustrated or being depressed because they cannot understand what is going on through teacher’s explanation for the lesson. She advises English teachers to change their strategy to make their classes very interesting for their students like talking or discussing something they love to talk about, make the class as group work in each group has various students’ interests. In addition, she mentions some difficulties which may face English teachers in using various dialogues between their students, how to keep them away from exhausted from a long time in discussing a subject in English whom they do not have too much words about it. Also, how to make reading in text books help students effectively and let them interact with each other all the time in English without need to open Chinese dictionary to look at the meaning of the word. Furthermore, she guides English teachers how to be successful in oral English classes. They must let their students talk about interesting things to attract their attention to learning the language.
Reaction:
Really it is very interesting article. I would like all English teachers to follow her advices to be good English teachers. In addition, how English teachers add to their classes more fun to be easy for students to gain the language. I like her illustration for many strategies about how to avoid difficulties in oral English classes and they will be more effectively for both students and teachers. She guided teachers to the correct way they can run classes and keep their students away from boring. He talks about the danger caused by smoking and how it is a disturbing trend. One of the issues is that it is no longer taboo for young boys to smoke. He points out the way they no longer even try to hide it from adults anymore. Vavi also talks about how the adults are enabling this unhealthy behavior. One example, he points to is the shop owner who is ready to sell cigarettes to the boys that are too young to smoke. Another factor for Vavi, is that parents are not as involved as much in their children’s lives. Finally, Vavi talks about the role peer pressure plays in a young person’s decision to smoke. He claims that peer pressure plays a big role in this problem of young people starting to smoke. He said that many young boys think that it makes them appear manlier and raises their status among their peers. Vavi claims that the way to combat this is through education and stiffer penalties for those who sell cigarettes to young people.

Reaction:

I agree with this article. Many people that I know start to smoke because of pressure from their friends. Young people also tend to do the same things they see other people do, especially when those people are their own age. The article also points out another factor. That is the people who provide the cigarettes. People have tried many things to stop smoking using various methods. They have restricted advertising for cigarettes and made it harder for underage people to buy them. However, the best way to stop smoking is to make it uncool. As long as young people think that smoking makes them look cool, they will find a way to get them.

RRj3

Sooma

Leverett

RRJ3

Understanding Tobacco Consumers

Reference:

Zid, Linda Abu-Shalback. Understanding Tobacco Consumers. 08 Feb. 2011. 12 Feb. 2011<http://www.cspnet.com/me2/audiences/dirmod.asp?sid=&nm=&type=publishing&mod=publications::article&mid=8f3a7027421841978f18be895f87f791&tier=4&id=084ef28018674e1a9485ac135edab75d&audid=6c81f2b488ce41838bc84af1ae2af9cd>.

Summary:

According to Linda Abu-Shalback Zid, in her article, “Understanding tobacco consumers,” tobacco consumers tend to be very loyal consumers. According to research, tobacco consumers are more likely than other consumers to switch stores if the store they usually shop at does not have their brand two times. Also, tobacco consumers are usually loyal to their brand and rarely buy a different brand. Tobacco buyers buy packs more often than they buy cartons, but those that buy cartons are less likely to switch stores because they go to the store less often. Heavy smokers also tend to buy their cigarettes at smoke shops while lighter smokers tend to buy theirs at convenience stores. By knowing how people shop, it allows stores to better target the customer.

Reaction:

Information like this is good for understanding how people shop and what controls their habits. I find it interesting that tobacco consumers are so loyal to their brands. I don’t know why this is the case, but it makes a person wonder. Most cigarettes are the same so I do not know why it makes such a difference. Still, I can see how this type of information would be important to people who run convenience stores. This would also be information that people who want to understand the habits of smokers would find interesting.

Can cigarette ads really lure kids to smoke?

Reference: Peeples, L. (2011, Jan.18). Can cigarette ads really lure kids to smoke? Thomson Reuters. There are several points mentioned in this article supporting this argument. One of the points is that teenagers who had seen the tobacco advertisements can recognize that it is a cigarette advertisement and they would guess the brand name. Also number of those teenagers would start smoking after sometime. So there is positive relationship between being exposed to cigarette advertisements in past and getting the habit. Also other reasons can increase the probability of smoking for teenagers like: friends, family, age, school. Normally if a teenager is finding signs to encourage smoking he will start the habit soon. There is an important factor, which engorges teenagers to smoke; most of them are trying to do what others are doing. Tobacco companies are facing problem because countries start banning their advertisements in all means. Actually this made those companies to become smarter and to come up with new ways to get business. They are targeting young people because they knew that if they did not start smoking when they are young, they will never smoke later, this is simply because young people normally they don’t have a choice, or they can not think like adults. Finally, teenagers are more likely to smoke if they are exposed more to the cigarette’s advertisements.

Reaction:

I think the article was clear and the author gave solid scientific studies to support his thoughts. Actually I agree with the author in most of the points, but there are some points that may influence those teenagers more. Cigarette companies knew that their target is mostly young people because they do not have good judgment on those types of things. Thy knew that in this age they are trying to be older, like 18 so they are touching their mental thoughts and they are giving them signs that when you smoke you would be a man. So it appears to me that when teenagers think about smoking actually they do not care about smoking, they care about being grown man and this is what those companies are doing, playing with their mind. Regarding the arrangement of the article, I think the writer can do it better, because just giving facts does not mean that we have to accept them. But he should write what he feels about it and then he can use studies information when it is appropriate. Personally I see that it is clear that advertisements is affecting almost all people regardless of buying the product but you would recognize it when you see it in the store and this is one goal all companies are looking for.

Teen Smoking

Reference: Shereevedic (2010, Dec.31). Teen Smoking Articlesbase.com. And the role of parents in educating their children about smoking and smoking effects. Smoking is one of the main causes of death. In fact, smoking kills around 1,000 people every day. Recent study showed that if people do not start smoking in early age, it is more likely that they will never smoke later. Moreover, other study showed that around 90% of people who died because of smoking related diseases started smoking when they were young. Most of teenagers know that smoking could kill them if they become addicted to it. Normally teenagers start smoking because of several reasons like, stress, peer pressure, smoking friends. It is clear that smoking has a lot of dangerous effects for our health. There are two categories of these effects, which are long-term effects, and short-term effects. Lung cancer and heart disease are the most obvious long-term causes of death. There are several short-term effects of smoking; for example, bad skin, bad breath, bad smelling cloths, increasing chances of health problems, and reduced athletic performance. According to the author, Nicotine is a very powerful and addictive drug. In fact, a study shows that teenagers who smoke are 3 times more likely to use alcohols, 8 times more likely to smoke marijuana, and 22 times more likely to use cocaine. According to American Cancer Association, teenagers who smoke are more likely to get in fights, carry weapons, attempt suicide, depressed, and get poor academic performance. Parents can play a major role to educating their children. They should live up to their children’s expectations to be a good model because a study shows that only 2% of the smokers have non-smoking parents. Parents are responsible to educate their children that they do not have to smoke to be mature. However, they should know that there are strict rules in home rejecting smoking. Parents are responsible to enhance their children self-esteem, felling of independency. They have to encourage their children to do physical exercise in school, and educate them how to cope with stress, worries, and social pressure. Also parents are responsible to teach their children how to make friends and how to solve their problems independently.

Reaction:

I agree with the author in almost all points specially when he said “good parenting is the best way to prevent teenage smoking” that teenagers need good parents who teach them, guide them, and help them to overcome their issues especially during their teenage period. In this article it shows that only two percent of smokers have parents who don’t smoke. This shows how is the relationship between good smoking parents and their effect on their children’s smoking habits. For example, I counted my friends who are smokers, and I found that all of them they have smoking father. On the other hand, there are some of my friends who are non-smokers they have non-smokers parents. It becomes a fact that smoking parents produce smoking children. On the other hand, I disagree with him in two points, first, when he says, “Nicotine is a very powerful and addictive drug”. In my opinion, nicotine is not very powerful drug. In fact, it is not classified as a drug otherwise you will not find it in the supermarkets, and all smokers can buy it easily. Second point is when he says “teen smokers are more likely than their non-smoking peers to get in fights, carry weapons, attempt suicide, and suffer from mental health problems such as depression and to engage in high-risk sexual behaviors. Other risks include poor academic and athletic performance, school drop-out rates, pregnancy, stealing and other delinquent behaviors”. The serious is the teenagers who smoke. Smoking always accruee I high school students and middle school students. When they smoke, they hide from their parents and their teacher. if a teacher knows their students smoke, they will give their students punishment. or visit their student's parents. This is a typical problem in my country. However, the government has already limited smoking in public; they give an area for people to smoke. It's more popular for women recently. Several years ago smoking was a men's thing, but now it is not just a men's thing, there are more and more women joining the smoking group. I think it's caused by the society we live in; women get the same stress as men, so smoking is one of the ways to reduce stress. There are many advertisements that showed smoking is bad for health, but they don't work well. Also there are many products to help smokers cut smoking, and many people tried them but they don't work, or it seems to work at the beginning but smokers will return to smoking soon. people tried to quit smoking by eating candy and chocolate when they feel they want to smoke and many other things. People know smoking is bad for themselves and for other people who don't smoke. Especially for children, it plays an important role. So there are rules that people can't smoke in public places.

How Smoking Threatens Your Life

Well, smoking in Saudi Arabia is just for men, but some women smoke secretly. The manager and the owner were there at the same time. They were very nice people and when i asked them that I was doing a survey, they responded automatically. So I asked them some few questions about what they feel about the smoking ban. When I was doing the interview, the owner left and directed me to his manager. They said, the smoking ban does not affect their business. They were complaining about the smoking ban since it has been into effect. I asked the manager if they are considering of building a place for the smokers in the bar and he said no, because Pk's does not run a lot of money and there is no room for it. So I understood that it is a small business. He also told me that restaurants should have different rules from bars because bars are more opened and they are for drinking. However, restaurant is for luxury and people do not really like to smoke in restaurants because they want to smell real food. Finally, the smoking ban does not have any effect on Pk's revenue and they are not happy about it.

In my opinion, i think that since the smoking ban has been in effect, many bars are complaining and it is really good because we need some kind of hygiene for our health. People should try to understand what is the benefit that they can have beside the smoking ban and how it can be really helpful to them. The smoking ban among different states in the United States can differ for bars. We can have many opinion from different people but the one that I got was about Pk's and I think Pk's is a very small place and the smoking ban will be better for them.

Smoking Ban is good or not?

My topic talks about smoking ban. My group wanted to know the opinion of people who smoke or not. In my idea, there are more and more people smoking, but the government knows that smoking is not good for health. Also a lot of people do not like people smoking in front of them so the government sets up the smoking ban. My group decided to do surveys for people. We made up questions for two sides of people and later we will compare the two groups. The questions were about what people think about the smoking ban and what do they think about smoking. Then, I went to Student Center to do my survey at my lunch time. People were kind and helped me to do the survey. My groups found the result is that many people have different opinions. There are four people who disagree with the smoking ban and fifteen people who agree with the smoking ban. Some people totally agree and support the new regulation of smoking ban in the U.S. Opponents of the smoking ban claim that smokers said they have rights to smoke and if they have the chance to vote, they will vote against the new regulations. In short, most people think the government should set up the smoking ban.

In my opinion, I am not a smoker so I do not like people smoking in front of me. I find that a lot of people smoke and they know that it is not good for health. However, they also want to smoke and they cannot stop smoking. It is like a habit for them. If they stop smoking, they will encounter some problems such as not thinking, feeling uncomfortable, having headache, or doing ineffective work. Although smokers cannot stop smoking, I agree with the government's establishing smoking ban. People have their rights. For example, smokers can smoke outside and non-smokers do not need to have second-hand smoking. This will be the best way for everyone.

Smoking Ban in Restaurant is a good regulation for human being

My group wanted to know opinions of restaurant and bar owners about smoking ban in restaurant. So, I went to the “Kahala” restaurant in Carbondale downtown after lunchtime because I need to interview. I asked the waiter for some food, and then I asked the owner for an interview. However, I was rejected in my interview because that restaurant was very busy, so I waited for the owner for my interview over 1 hour. Owner’s son gave an interview to me. He said, “I don’t care a bit about smoking ban because it doesn’t affect my restaurant”. He said to me that a more important thing is taste of food and clean area than smoking ban. In addition, he said that “my restaurant doesn’t have a special place for smokers and I don’t want to make a special place for smokers because I don’t smoke”. Finally, he claimed that smoking ban is a good rule because most people don’t like smoke and people want to eat and rest in a restaurant with a fresh air. However, he said that bars should have different rules from restaurants because bar is a merrymaking place. Therefore, he doesn’t care about the smoking ban, but he completely agrees with the smoking ban in public spaces.

In my opinion, owners in most restaurants are very busy, so I didn’t get a lot of time. In addition, we should make appointment for some interview in a restaurant. I’m a smoker so I don’t like the smoking ban; however, I also completely agree that we need the smoking ban in restaurants for people. Smoking ban in restaurants can make more human health and more fresh air. Therefore, I think that smoking ban in restaurant and public spaces is a good policy for human beings and our children.

Information:
Restaurant - Kahala
Date - 2008, February 20
Time - 3 : 50 pm
Interview : Owner's Son (manager)

smoking ban is fine for "Pizza Hut"

The restaurant I went to is "Pizza Hut". Now I am very interested in whether this rule will make people not like to go shopping. So I went to ask the manage to let me know the answers, went to ask a restaurant and a bar manager to find out what I want.
First, in restaurant: (Pizzahut)
The manager is a nice guy; he told me before the rule, he does not care if you smoke here, but he will make who smoke and nonsmoker sit in different places. He have some of friends come to have lunch; they said that not allowing smoke here is a bad idea. But the rule said it, nobody can change it. Customers still come here to have dinner or lunch; he thinks food is important and Americans have a lot of lazy people, they do not want to stay at home cook, so they come to here and pay to eat. So some smokers do not like this, but have no choice and some people say this is good for children and non-smokers; the second hand smoke will never happen. But at the end, he does not care if law says we cannot smoke in the restaurant, because he believes this rule will never make customers stop going to a restaurant.

In a Bar: (Forget name)
I asked some of people, including a manager; they said they can not believe Illinois has a rule that there is no smoking in the bar. They said, what is a bar? It is a club for people to have more fun here, so they need to smoke here. Bar is different with restaurant; it is for us to have fun here. So they cannot believe the Illinois government has this rule in a club. Bars and restaurants are different, so they hope they can change this rule in the bar.

I believe the ban on smoking in the restaurant is a good idea; it can make more people healthy, and the waiter will be healthy too, maybe they are not smokers, but they work there, so they have no choice. But I disagree with the ban on smoking in the bar; a bar is a club for people to have more fun, weekend people have parties and have rest in the bar, so they smoke there, but now it changed, and a lot of people do not like this rule and we hope government can think more and more and change this rule.

Effects of Smoking Ban

http://media.www.siude.com/media/storage/paper1096/news/2008/01/18/City/Smoking.Ban.Has.Unforeseen.Effects.On.Restaurants-3157222.shtml

According to Dave Lopez many restaurants enjoyed new life since the smoking ban came into effect. Many restaurants reported their revenue increased since the smoking ban went into effect, but 600 violations were reported through out h state and most of the local restaurants claim that most of their customers followed the new law. For an example of smoking ban, The Longbranch Coffeehouse is the premier spot in Carbondale and many people thought that his business may suffer because of the new law but they were wrong, it has increased. The new law stated if customers want to smoke to go outside and smoke. Many restaurant owner's appreciate the new law because it makes their business grow and you can smell real food inside.

I think smoking ban is a good and safe for people because it can save hem from having cancer. Smoking ban in a restaurant can make the food much safer than before and help people be in good health. There is a good side of smoking ban and a bad side that people do not like, some people say they do not feel well smoking outside Show Me's where they work, according to Khatleen Kelly, a sophomore student at John A. Community College from DuQuoin. There is also some of the customers who want to take profit of the smoking ban to avoid paying for their food. So the smoking ban is a good thing that people enjoyed and it makes the place more comfortable to people because they can really smell good food, enjoy it and attract people because it is clean.

articles

http://media.www.siude.com/media/storage/paper1096/news/2008/01/18/City/Smoking.Ban.Has.Unforeseen.Effects.On.Restaurants-3157222.shtml
Smoking Ban has unforseen effects on Restaurants- Daily Egyptian

http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=990DE2D91E30F93AA15750C0A9629C8B63&sec=health
Bars & restaurants thrive (in NYC, after ban)/NY Times

http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn3557-public-smoking-ban-slashes-heart-attacks.html
Ban slashes heart attacks, New Scientist

http://www.semissourian.com/story/1301303.html
S.E. Because they want to make people health. But in a lot of places, like the bars and restaurants, people cannot smoke, but this let less come to here. And let these restaurants get less money than before. But the second they show us, some of people who is not a smoker went to restaurant and say, because of none smokers, we can feel food’s smell is better. Now, it looks like more and more places will ban smoking, if they smoking, they will have a big problem.

Ban public smoking is good, it will make people health, and it will stop the second hand smoke. The air will be clean and fresh. This is good things. But we not only think one way, we needs think more. This ban public smoking they did not ask smokers, and then they say you can do that, they just ask none-smokers, this is not good idea. Second is what smokers can do right now? Go restaurants they can not smoker, so this is very bad for them. The last one is what about the business, because of can not smoke, a lot of people will do not go to restaurants or go there less then before, this is not good for business. So we needs find a good idea to fix this problem. We can cut the restaurants; half place for smokers and half for none-smokers, this will be a good choice for people. Ban public smoking is good for half people. We needs think another half and help another half. We cannot help none-smoker only, So government needs find a good way to fix this problem, not say stop will ok!

After the smoking ban

The article I read talked about what happened after the smoking ban. After the smoking ban had two results. First, after smoking ban the environment became well. People stopped smoke inside; so no second hand smoke pollution. Then, the air becomes good because less smoking, less air pollution. After the smoking ban there was not much smog to pollute our air. However, the second one is for the bar; because of the smoking ban the sales are going down. People cannot smoke inside they have to go outside. Therefore, they spent less time in the bar and the bar cannot serve them outside. It causes the bar to be unable to earn more money. In the end, it has good results and bad result.

After I read the article, I felt happy about the environment becoming good. We can have clean and beautiful environment and people can become healthier. And for the bar I just feel sorry for them; because of the smoking ban, the bar cannot earn more money. Their sales are going down. But because I don’t smoke, I don’t care what happened and what changed. Just I can live good and that’s fine for me.

Smoking ban has unforenseen effects on restaurants.

Acording to Dave Lopez the smoking ban is working mostly in positive way. There are some advantages as well as disadvantages. Mostly carbondale restaurants says that they increased their business with this new smoking ban policy. Customer says that they can smell the food not the smoke of cigarates. Small businesses are increase of aproxlimately 7%, which is surprised and business got the positive comments. Howevr, there are some confusion about customer. They are in the restaurant and ordered the food after a while they went for the smoke outside and waiter table gets cleaned off if they have food, when some guest came back so they have to re-make all of it so its waste of food and as well money. This smoking ban policy is bad for the women also, who worked and going outside for smoke cigaratte thats not safe, especially lae at night. Smoking ban has two side but people can tack it positively so it will be better future to them.

My opponants says that this policy might be cause health problems and save money. People who are not smoker they can get good benifites by this policy. For example, if you are in the restaurants with your children and somebody is smoking that will be a problem for your all of the health because you are not addict of smoking and your children are very sensitive so they can get bad effects. This policy is good for every one and people have to think about it positively. Its a better for health and people can save the money.

Public smokind ban reduces heart attacks

This article is this website.

In Bhattacharya’s (2003) article, “Public Smoking Ban Slashes Heart Attacks,” the author claims that some countries’ governments proclaim the prohibition about public smoking places in order to protect everyone’s health. First, the author introduces the topic of smoking ban that causes the fewer heart attacks and reduces the second-hand smoker. Next, she shows some examples to explain the results about the ban of smoking. For example, in Helena the researches compared the effect about whether the prohibition was published or not. They found that the average of heart attacks reduced after the smoking ban. In addition, some studies showed that there is a huge effect of smoking, such as: the risk of lung cancer. In conclusion, there is more and more smoking bans that are common today in many countries.

In my opinion, smoking ban is good for people’s health. Nowadays there are more and more people who like to smoke and can’t stop smoking. They think that it is a habit for them. If the government proclaims the smoking prohibition in public places, such as restaurants or train stations, a lot of people could survive because of the second-hand smoking. Although many smokers do not like the smoking ban that takes off their rights of smoking, many countries publish the law in order to protect other people. Besides, according to the result, when the smoking ban is published in somewhere, the average of heart attacks reduces. In fact, this is good news for everyone. If people want to smoke, they have to think about others. In a word, the smoking ban is a better way to help people protect their health.

Posted by Yao.

Posting to this blog

These Newstalk group blogs are on an old CESL weblog system (CESL 06) so they have a different log-on. Some people felt this would give bars and restaurants outside of town an advantage. It didn't matter, because the state became smoke-free (no smoke) in January 2008. Now that smoking is illegal in all bars and restaurants in the state, no town or area has any advantage over another.

When we asked the people, do you think that it should be smoke illegal in the bar? Most of them think that people should quit smoking in bar and restaurant, and especially in restaurant, women do not want people to quit smoking because they hate smell during they are eating something. Some people think that smoke-free in Carbondale should not be applied because it is not illegal and it is freedom to smoke cigarettes. They think that companies should have the place to smoke for smokers or, smokers should be out when they smoke. Most of them believe that smoking cigarette relieves stresses and people get addicted to cigarettes. Almost half of them think that different kinds of cigarettes give us different feeling, and as not well as opposites think.

My opinion...

I think people and I have almost same thinking about smoking in public places but, I am the one of smoker, so I do not want to quit smoking even it is public places. How come I should quit smoking without government does not set this ban? I am completely disagreeing with this ban because of above. However, I think people who work in company should quit smoking in the building because other people who do not smoke do not want to second-hand smoke, so they should be in outside when they smoke. I was surprised that people think about smoking as well as me, except smoke in public place. They basically agree with smoke-free in Carbondale and I also agree with it. Even smoker, I, think like that, so the other guys might think like me.

<span People who don’t smoke are affected by second hand smoke and number of people is 126 million according to one guy. Risk of increase heart disease is 25 to 30 percents, and risk of increase lung cancer is 20 to 30 percent. Some owners think that they’re worried about decreasing their earnings by smoke-free ban. So, they think that it’s difficult to set the ban in their business. But, they also think that if they set the ban, they could protect customer who don’t smoke or their employees.

I think bar and restaurant owners should not set the smoke free ban because I think they just separate the place and just ask customers when they come, “do you smoke?, or something like that. Maybe, they now do this style, but I think this is the best way to solve this problem because they can get earn as well as so far and customers won’t argue them about smoke-free. That’s why I think they don’t have to set this ban. I know second hand smoke is too bad and cause some diseases to people who don’t smoke. However, this is the world. Customer know that if they go to the bar or restaurant, at least few people smoke their. That’s why non-smoker should be patient about this problem.

Masa

hello!
